Maternal and Newborn Health – Creating the healthiest beginnings.

Pregnancy is an exciting time with lots of questions! This month, we’re sharing news about a new blood test available to pregnant people in Ontario. A simple blood test can help your healthcare team learn more about your blood type and your baby’s too. If you are Rh- you may need special care. In this month’s newsletter, we’ll explain what the test is, why it matters and what you can expect. Whether you’re expecting or a friend or family member is, this is information you can use and share.

A messager from our Medical Director

This month, we’re focusing on expectant parents and families with little ones. With Ontario introducing a new screening pathway for Rh-negative pregnancies and RSV season approaching, there are some important updates worth sharing. We’ll take a look at what’s new, what it means for your growing family, and how these programs can help support a healthy start for your baby.

Pregnant? Know Your Rh Blood Type

As of September 21, Ontario has a new screening program for pregnant people with Rh-negative blood types (A-, B-, AB- or O-). Sometimes, a mother’s blood type and her baby’s blood type are different, which can cause health problems. A simple blood test during pregnancy can now help doctors check the baby’s Rh status and decide if special treatment is needed. This month’s newsletter will give you more information and links so you can take action.

Pregnant? Read this.

Ontario has introduced a new screening program to help identify possible blood type differences between a pregnant person and their baby. This simple blood test can help make pregnancy care safer and more personalized.

Ontario’s new, publicly funded screening program can check your baby’s Rh status using a simple blood sample from you, starting at 11 weeks of pregnancy.

  • If your baby is Rh-negative: You generally won’t need preventive Rh treatment.
  • If your baby is Rh-positive: Your healthcare provider will recommend treatment to help protect your baby.
  • If the results are unclear: Your healthcare provider will explain the next steps.

The treatment is an injection called Rh immune globulin (RhIG), also known as WinRho.

It helps prevent your body from making antibodies against Rh-positive blood. When needed, it’s usually given around 28 weeks of pregnancy. If you’re pregnant or planning a pregnancy, know your blood type and ask about Rh screening if you’re Rh-negative.

Team Spotlight

Dogter Riley,

Each month we shine our light on a team member and this month we’re celebrating Dogster Riley!

Helping You To Know Us Better

Meet Dogster Riley

1. What is your official job title at Winterberry, and how long have you been with Winterberry?

I’m Riley, Winterberry’s Chief Happiness Officer and Head of Treat Inspection! I’m a five-year-old mini goldendoodle, and my length of service is measured in tail wags rather than years. Human Resources is still trying to calculate it.

2. Do you bring a human to work with you? If yes, tell us a bit about them.

Yes! I bring my mom, Krysta, Winterberry’s Operations Manager. She helps keep the practice running smoothly and takes care of a whole lot of people. I take care of her by reminding her to stop working occasionally and pet me. We’re a very effective management team.

3. What’s your favourite part of coming to work?

You expect me to choose? Greeting patients and visiting the staff are wonderful, but supervising snack breaks is a serious professional responsibility. If I hear a wrapper, I report for duty immediately. I expect Auntie Erin’s lap to be available for a quick hello when I arrive, and I always ensure that Nurse Dawn does not forget her treats at home. Her bag is very easy to find. I really love when I get to see the patients in the waiting room, but my mom won’t let me unless patients specifically ask for me. So if you want to pet me, just ask!! I would prefer to say hello to every single person, but I know some people aren’t feeling well, or are a bit afraid of dogs.

4. Do you have any special talents or responsibilities that make you an important member of the Winterberry team?

I specialize in making people smile, accepting unlimited pets, and knowing exactly when someone could use a furry little visitor. I’m also excellent at looking underfed immediately after eating. That takes talent. The team in the lunch room has witnessed my talents!

5. When you’re off duty, what do you like to do for fun?

My ideal day includes a good walk, some playtime, plenty of cuddles, and a nap that turns into another nap. I also like keeping my humans company—even when they go into rooms they apparently wanted to visit alone.

6. We hear you’re dressing up for Halloween! What’s your costume this year, and are you expecting treats in exchange for showing it off?

I’m dressing up as a hot dog because Mom bought ketchup and mustard costumes for the cats. Apparently, I’m the main course and they’re my emotional support condiments. They’re both pretty salty about it, but I’m frankly thrilled. And yes, I expect treats—putting up with those two deserves more than minimum wag.
